The Happiness Factor - A Principle Applicable in Design

I want to share an excellent presentation of one of the most important, powerful and influential factors that can be applied to any and all business models.  You can most certainly take this principle even further and apply it when designing user interfaces or when conceptualizing interactive websites.  This is a presentation by Tara Hunt that is found on Dave Kellogg’s blogpost “Happiness as a Business Model”.

Enjoy the show!

Introduction to Quantifying Design

In recent years there has been an increased interest and industry buzz about design and its value through quantification. The artistic community is divided in opinion when the topic of quantifying their designs is brought to light, but in my opinion, quantifying isn’t a bad idea after all.  And no, you shouldn’t feel insulted if someone makes such a suggestion.  As a matter of fact, I am a zealous advocate of quantifying design for many reasons.  Think about it this way.  We already know your design looks great!  You’ve thought out the layout and it’s perfect for your target audience.  So wouldn’t it make sense that you would want to show the quantity of its value in comparison to all other aspects of a business and how your efforts impact the success of that business?  I would certainly be interested in seeing those numbers!  But there are other benefits as well.  Opening up our minds to testing, analyzing and quantifying design helps sharpen our design skills by reprogramming our artistic brains to think beyond the color scheme or choice of font, but rather think of factors like usability, accountability and return on investment.  This is designing with logic.  And soon enough we’ll be talking the same language investors, CEOs, and managerial staff are eager to speak.

Imagine being able to show through live data the exact percentage of increase in ROI strictly due to the designing efforts of your creative department, that thanks to your research coupled with your artistic abilities you were able to increase conversion rates by 25, 50, 200%.  How wonderful is that!  And that’s where testing and analytics play a vital role.

Part of this eye-opening process is the ability to single out individual parts of a design and test them against another version, in pursuit of the best converting design. There are an infinite number of sites, blogs and books where this science is spoken of and dissected, tested and perfected. I will share with you the best and most practical suggestions and solutions I’ve found in my own research that will aid you in making your current site or online marketing campaign an ROI success!
